Something different in Koh Samui

Lately, I have been overwhelmed with the number of people who tell me that they have been to Thailand several times and it is time to try something different. Something different I ask – like what? Where in Thailand have you been?

The answer is always the same – Phuket! Only Phuket I ask? Yes – Thailand

Would you eat fried grasshoppers?

Why had I avoided it for so long?

Stupidity and stubbornness perhaps?

Despite the fact I had spent time backpacking through Thailand and having returned to its capital Bangkok many times over the years, I had declared Khao San Road a personal no-go zone.

Bangkok's Siam@Siam Design Hotel revamped and reinvented

There’s something about hotels and I’m always particularly excited to see a major refurbishment or even an old decrepit building transformed into a swank new establishment.

SO Sofitel Bangkok - Like nothing you’ve seen before

Sofitel SO Bangkok

The mighty French AccorHotels hospitality company knows a thing or two about hotels, with more than 4,500 hotels, resorts and residences across 100 different countries. Sofitel has been their marquee brand since acquiring the company in 1980, sort of like Lexus is to Toyota. Yeah, Sofitel is Accor’s ‘show off’ brand and the new ‘SO’ extension is the ultra-hip side they describe as “highly creative and fashion-led, each SO Hotel is an avant-garde masterpiece imaginatively inspired by an iconic, signature designer.”

Thai cooking school in Chiang Mai

by Adam Corney in Chiang Mai

I’m a bit of an amateur cook.

I love to gather my ingredients, lay them all out on the kitchen bench, turn on some Meatloaf, and lose myself in the joy of food for an hour or two as I prepare a delicious meal. A glass of wine or three always seems to make my cooking taste even better.

Delights of Chiang Dao

Just an hour north of Chiang Mai is the community of Chiang Dao, a gateway to trekking in the mountains and a hub for elephant camps. Chiang Dao is where the rice field meets the jungle and home to a weekly market full of ethnic charm. Villagers from miles around head for Chiang Dao every Tuesday to shop for essentials and trade their homegrown harvests.
